Fresh Insights into Wave Energy Converter Design from the TU Delft team!🌊🔧

We’re excited to spotlight a new contribution from Jian Tan, Yufeng Zhang, Avni Jain, and George Lavidas from Delft University of Technology, recently published in the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering! 🎉

Their latest paper,“The Impacts of Power Take-Off Surviving Strategies on the Extreme Load Estimations of Wave Energy Converters,”explores how different Power Take-Off (PTO) control strategies influence the structural loads experienced by wave energy converters (WECs) in extreme sea conditions.

Using a nonlinear time-domain model, the team examined how PTO settings affect both PTO system loads and end-stop system loads. Key findings include:

  • Up to 57% variation in PTO loads and 63% in end-stop loads depending on PTO damping settings.

  • A reminder that optimizing one component can unintentionally increase stress on another—emphasizing the importance of a holistic design approach.

This research is a valuable step toward more robust and efficient marine energy systems. 🌊⚡

And yes—it’s open access! 🤩
